Jessica Melly

Jessica Melly is in her third year at the University of Nottingham studying music. Actively involved with the University’s musical endeavours; Jessica has sat on the University’s Music Society committee for the last year, sung in Viva Voce – the University’s chamber choir and next year she will go on to conduct the University lady’s choir – Coro Sorelle. Jessica is a choral scholar at St Barnabas Cathedral; her most recent success was touring Cologne with the University orchestra – Sinfonia, singing Barber’s Knoxville.

Dawn Foxall, mezzo-soprano.

Born in Bridgnorth, Shropshire, Dawn Foxall originally studied as a Knitware Designer at Nottingham Trent Polytechnic and has pursued a successful career in the textile industry. Her singing took a more prominent role when she began studying with Pamela Cook MBE, and graduated from the MA Music course at Birmingham Conservatoire with a distinction.

She is a founder member of the professional quartet 'Bella Voce', a member of the cabaret ensemble '7 after 8', both of which have performed internationally, and co-founder of Voice Forum, an organisation designed to promote talented young classical singers in the midlands.

Dawn participated at the Britten-Pears Contemporary Song Course with Phyllis Curtin, and at Dartington International Summer School last year where she was also invited to take part in master classes given by Jane Manning and David Mason.

She has been spotted going solo in concerts at Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall, Derby Playhouse, Nottingham Playhouse, Birmingham Adrian Boult Hall and Nottingham Theatre Royal. She has graced the operatic stage as the Mozart heroines Despina, Zerlina and Cherubin, as well as Tchaikovsky's Olga, Britten's Nancy and Bizet's Carmen. She was nominated for Best Supporting Actress at the 1999 International G & S Festival at Buxton Opera House for her performance as Phoebe in Derby G & S Co's award winning production of 'Yeoman of the Guard'.

Adam Powell

Curriculum Vitae

Born and raised in West Bridgford, Adam began to study the flute at 11 with Jo Chandler and later Viola Calthrop-Owen. He is currently in his first year on a scholarship to the Birmingham Conservatoire, studying with Jonathan Rimmer, Karen Jones and Rachel Brown. An experienced orchestral player, he has performed with various ensembles throughout the country, touring Europe on many occasions and performing in London's West End with National Youth Music Theatre. Adam currently holds the post of Principal Flute with the Hallé Youth Orchestra.

Nottingham has seen Adam perform a number of recitals and both Mozart Flute Concertos with the Nottingham Youth and Nottingham Charity Orchestras. He is currently striving to arrange more solo engagements. Adam is extremely grateful to the Radcliffe on Trent Male Voice Choir for the support they have shown him and shall be using their generous sponsorship to help purchase a new instrument in the near future.

Fiona Hammacot, Soprano

Fiona won a scholarship to the Guildhall School of Music and Drama after gaining a First Class Honours degree in Music. She has been the subject of a BBC documentary and currently studies with Robert Dean. Fiona has won numerous awards and scholarships, most notably the Countess of Munster Musical Trust, the Ian Fleming Award, the Crompton Lied Award and First Prize in the John Warner Memorial Competition.

Donna Bateman, soprano.

Like Dawn, Donna has sung as a soloist with us on a number of occasions since singing as one of the Quartet Bella-Voce at our Annual Dinner in 1996. Most recently she accompanied us on a tour to Belgium and Germany in May 1999 where her performances delighted us and our audiences. As another attractive and vivacious young lady she provides the perfect contrast to the Choir's on stage appearence. We are delighted that she has agreed to travel as our soloist on our tour to South Africa in Feb. 2000 and also to appear with us at our major concert in Nottingham's Royal Concert Hall the following December. The following biographical notes are quoted from her recent recital flyer:

Born in Lincolnshire and educated in Nottingham Donna gained a degree in media before going on to study music at the Guildhall School of music and drama. She was awarded the GSMD Singing Prize and was the principal's nomination for the prestigious James Horne Scholarship. A pupil of Noelle Barker, Donna continued her studies at the Royal Academy of Music, being awarded an Associated board Scholarship for Opera Studies. She has performed in Singapore, Malaysia, Jordan, Barcelona and Arizona. In 1998 she took part in the Songmakers' Almanac with Graham Johnson, and, more recently a contemporary music project with Sarah Walker. In spring 1999, she was a finalist in both the Royal Overseas League Competition and the Kathleen Ferrier Memorial Prize and won the National Federation of Music Societies award. Roles include Gretel in scenes from Hansel and Gretel; Zdenka in scenes from Arabella; Barbarina in Le nozze di Figaro conducted by Sir Colin Davis and Mrs Coyle in Owen Wingrave. Future engagements include the role of Erisbe in L'Ormindo for the William Walton Trust in Italy. Donna is actively seeking sponsorship to continue her vocal training.

Diana Sharp, soprano

Diana Sharp was raised in Canada and returned to England to study with Esther Salaman (former vocal consultant to the National Opera Studio). She was a finalist of the Kathleen Ferrier and the Royal Overseas League competitions in 1996 and won the Mario Lanza Prize at the Birmingham Conservatoire where she studied with Pam Cook. She had sung Barbarina for Mid-Wales Opera and English Touring Opera, Pamina in Magic Flute with Music Theatre Kurnow, Leila in the Pearl Fishers for Winchester College and Cherubino and Despina for Opera Inside Out. An oratorio soloist and recitalist, she has appeared at Salisbury and Cheltenham Festivals, St John's Smith Square and the Purcell Room as well as in Salisbury and Winchester Cathedrals. Diana is a member of Sirens (with Dawn Foxall and Janine Smith), who last year released their first CD, and is also a member of Bella Voce.

Deborah Norman, soprano

A former three times winner of the Female Vocal Prize in the international Gilbert and Sullivan Festival in Buxton, Deborah studied at the Royal College of Music in London, where amongst other prizes won the coveted Ted Moss lieder Prize Deborah made her professional debut on 2000 as Maria in West Side Story at La Scala Milan and also the Ljubljana Festival. This year she made her debut at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden singing Chloe in "Queen of Spades" conducted by Bernard Haitink. Other roles include Alcibiades, in Steffani's "La Liberta Contenta" and Aminta in Mozart's "Il Re Pastore" with Classical Opera Company, on tour and at the Linbury Studios,Covent Garden. Concert Performances include a tour with the Orchestra of the Welsh National Opera Company, Naiad in "Ariadne auf Naxos" by Richard Strauss with the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Sir Simon Rattle, and concert programmes with the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic and Ulster Orchestras. More recently in her short but highly successful career Deborah has performed Musetta in Welsh National Opera's revival of La Boheme in the Autumn Season of 2001, earlier that year she took part in WNO's regional tour performing Mimi in scenes from the same opera. Deborah has recently recorded Vivaldi's Gloria,Dixit Dominus and Magnificat with the Academy of Ancient Music and Stephen Cleobury for EMI Classics. Born in Sheffield, Deborah is now living in Nottingham with her husband Giles and studies with Pamela Cook MBE and Ingrid Surgenor MBE The last occasion on which Deborah performed with the Radcliffe on Trent Male Voice Choir was at the beautiful Barnbygate Methodist Church in Newark in 2000. Now we are delighted to have her as our guest in April 2003 at a lunchtime concert in the world famous Whitehall Palace, Banqueting House, in London. The choir will be singing again in the evening for the residents at the Royal Hospital,Chelsea.

Corrinne Lang, mezzo soprano

Nottingham born, Corinne obtained a Diploma in vocal performance from Birmingham Conservatoire in 1998 where she was a pupil of Pamela Cook MBE and with whom she continues to study. Corinne has performed widely in opera, oratorio and on the concert platform. Past operatic roles include the Witch in Hansel and Gretel; The Princess in Suor Angelica; Third Lady in Magic Flute; Filipyveuna in Eugene Onegin; Mistress Quickly in Falstaff. Oratario performances include Handel`s Messiah; Mozart`s Requem; Mendelssohn`s Elijah; Rossini`s Petit Messe Solonnelle; Vivaldi`s Gloria; Nelson`s Imperial Mass.
